Buy a MacBook Now or Wait for Apple’s 28 October Launch?

Diwali sale banners are screaming “lowest price ever” on MacBooks, and Apple has quietly booked a date to spoil the party. So should you buy a MacBook now or wait for Apple’s 28 October “Pro and Tell” launch? Short answer: it depends on which Mac is sitting in your cart. Long answer: that is this whole article, plus a 4-question Wait-or-Buy Test at the end so you can decide before your card offer expires.

We are not going to recap rumour lists. Instead we sorted every current Mac and iPad mini into three boxes: safe to buy today, wait two days, and wait two weeks. Let’s go.

What is actually happening on 28 October

Apple’s “Pro and Tell” is a hands-on session for invited media and creators in Los Angeles, not a classic keynote. It starts at 10am Pacific, which is 10:30pm IST on Wednesday, 28 October. Expect announcements through press releases around that time, so Thursday morning chai is when most of India will catch up.

Apple has not named a single product. Going by reports from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, MacRumors and others, this is the expected line-up:

What is missing from that list matters just as much. No new MacBook Air is expected. No new Mac mini either, since the M6 Mac mini already arrived in August. Reports say the new hardware could reach stores from around 6 November, but Apple has not confirmed India dates, and Indian availability sometimes trails the US by a few days. Diwali falls on 8 November, so new stock landing before Lakshmi Puja is possible, not promised.

The three boxes: where your Mac falls

Box 1: Safe to buy today

MacBook Air M5. This is the Mac most Indians actually buy, and it is not on the 28 October list. The 13-inch 16GB/512GB model carries an MRP of Rs 1,49,900 and has been listed on Flipkart at Rs 1,35,990 as of 26 October, with a recent low of Rs 1,31,990 on 23 October. Croma’s Festival of Dreams sale, which runs till 31 October, also advertises much lower effective prices, but those need student or teacher pricing, an exchange and bank cashback stacked together.

Our take: an Air buyer gains almost nothing by waiting for an event that does not include the Air. If anything, the risk runs the other way, because festive bank offers end and listings bounce by Rs 4,000 in a day, as the Air’s own price history shows. Buy it when your effective price is close to the recent low, and move on with life.

Mac mini M6. Already refreshed in August, so no reason to hold back.

Box 2: Wait two days

Entry 14-inch MacBook Pro (M5). The 16GB/512GB model is listed from Rs 1,69,900 at Vijay Sales and Unicorn Store right now, while Amazon shows Rs 2,22,990 for the same configuration. That spread alone tells you prices are all over the place. More important, this exact laptop is tipped to get the M6 chip on Wednesday.

Waiting until Thursday morning costs you two days and gives you two outcomes, both good:

24-inch iMac (M4). Same logic. Apple India lists the base model at Rs 1,74,900, while Vijay Sales currently shows Rs 1,39,490. That Rs 35,410 gap is already a clearance-style signal. Wait for Wednesday night, then decide whether the M6 version is worth the difference.

Box 3: Wait two weeks (or longer)

Higher-end 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro (M5 Pro and M5 Max). If the rumours hold, the next version gets the biggest Mac redesign in years: OLED, touch, a lighter build. Spending Rs 2.5 lakh-plus on the outgoing design four days before that reveal is the classic expensive mistake. Even if you never plan to touch the screen, the OLED panel alone is a real upgrade for photo and video work.

iPad mini. We compared the current A17 Pro model against Oppo’s new tablet in our Oppo Pad Mini vs iPad mini breakdown, and its biggest weakness was the 60Hz LCD screen. An OLED iPad mini fixes exactly that. Reports from the US suggest a higher price for the new model, so the old one could become the value pick, but only once the new one is official.

The hidden costs of waiting

Waiting is not free, so be honest about these before you close the tab:

The CyberIntro Wait-or-Buy Test

Four questions. Answer in order and stop at the first verdict that fits.

1. Is your Mac a MacBook Air or Mac mini?

Neither is expected on 28 October. Verdict: BUY NOW, at the best effective price you can get before your bank offer ends.

2. Do you need it before 6 November?

Exams, a new job, a shoot booked? Verdict: BUY NOW, but pick the cheapest authorised listing, not the first one you see. The same MacBook Pro is listed Rs 53,000 apart across stores today.

3. Is it an entry MacBook Pro or an iMac?

Verdict: WAIT TWO DAYS. Read the Thursday morning price list, then either buy the M6 model or grab the old one if a retailer drops it.

4. Is it a high-end MacBook Pro or an iPad mini?

Verdict: WAIT TWO WEEKS. Let the redesign land, see India pricing, read the first reviews, and then choose between the shiny new model and a discounted old one.

Financing any of these on EMI? Check the tenure fine print first. Our iPhone Duo buying guide explains why No Cost EMI often covers only short tenures, and that applies to Macs too.

Final Thought

Apple’s October launch is not a reason to freeze every Mac purchase in India. It is a reason to check which Mac you are buying. Air and Mac mini shoppers can grab their festive deal today without regret. Entry MacBook Pro and iMac shoppers should give it 48 hours. And anyone eyeing a big MacBook Pro or an iPad mini should hold the card for now, because the next one is almost here.
