What is a Quantum Computer?

Quantum Computer which is mainly focused to develop a computer based on the principle of Quantum theory, which explains the nature and behavior of energy and matter on the quantum (atomic and subatomic) level. Due to its atomic level operations, it can be more efficient and consume less energy than our modern computers.

The theory was first originated by Paul Benioff, who is an American Physicist. In 1980 he was the first to describe a quantum mechanical model of a quantum computer with Hamilton functions. He received the International Quantum Communication Award from the International Organization for Quantum Communications, Computing, and Measurement in 2000. In 2001, he received the Distinguished Performance Award from the University of Chicago (which owns the Argonne Laboratory) and in 2001 he became a fellow of the American Physical Society.

The Quantum Computer is a bit different from the normal computer which is based on normal transistors. Where it can store either 1 or 0 in a bit. But a Quantum Computer using Quantum bit which can store more information than a bit. It is nearly 100 Million times faster than our traditional computer, said in an article in Sciencealert.

What is the need of a Quantum Computer?

It’s having a very different working principle than our traditional computers. The Quantum Computers can be used to solve particular mathematical problems such as finding the very large prime number. Most likely it will play an important role in Cryptography such as encrypting and decrypting our online information. But researchers already on the way to develop the technology to resist the Quantum Hacking. Also, researchers hope they will be able to use quantum simulations to design entirely new molecules for use in medicine.

Just as regular computers help us human, it is best to think of quantum computers as help for regular computers. They will call them when the math is more than they can handle. More often in the cloud than in the home or office.

Here’s an animated video which explains the Quantum Computer:
