Annual Recharge Plan India: Lock 365 Days Before the Next Tariff Hike?

Thinking about an annual recharge plan India style lock-in before the next tariff hike? Fair question. Airtel already pushed its postpaid plans up by Rs 50 on 8 October, a brokerage report says prepaid prices could rise 12 to 15 percent in the next four to five months, and Jio’s boss says Jio “always” has the ability to raise prices, just with no date attached. So the smart-money move looks obvious: pay for 365 days now, laugh later. But is it really that simple, or are you just handing Rs 3,600 to your telco a year early?

We ran the numbers on today’s Jio, Airtel and Vi plans, built a hike scenario, and then made a 4-question Lock-or-Wait Test so you can decide in two minutes. Short version: for most daily-data users, the annual pack wins even if no hike ever comes. The hike just makes the win bigger. But there are three kinds of people who should not lock in.

What is actually confirmed, and what is only a forecast

Before anyone panics and recharges for five years (you cannot, relax), here is the scoreboard as of 20 October 2026:

  • Confirmed: Airtel raised postpaid rentals by Rs 50 from 8 October. The individual plan went from Rs 449 to Rs 499, and family plans now run from Rs 749 to Rs 1,799. In return, every SIM gets one free five-day international roaming pack per year.
  • Confirmed: Airtel quietly dropped some popular prepaid packs such as Rs 299, Rs 579 and Rs 619 in a few circles earlier this year, according to reports.
  • Forecast only: Centrum Institutional Research expects a 12 to 15 percent industry-wide tariff hike within four to five months. No operator has announced prepaid hikes.
  • On the record: Jio’s Akash Ambani said on 15 October that Jio can raise prices but would rather grow by selling more services. He gave no timeline. Jio Platforms’ IPO opens on 21 October.

So nobody can promise you a hike date. That is exactly why we did the maths both ways: with a hike and without one.

The annual plans on the table right now

These are the 365-day daily-data packs currently listed by the three private operators. Telcos change plans by circle, so always enter your own number in the app before paying.

  • Jio Rs 3,599: 2.5GB per day, unlimited 5G for eligible users, unlimited calls, 100 SMS per day. The current 10th anniversary version adds 12 monthly 10GB bonus vouchers and digital extras that Jio values at up to Rs 2,000.
  • Airtel Rs 3,599: 2GB per day, unlimited 5G for eligible users, unlimited calls, 100 SMS per day.
  • Airtel Rs 3,999: 2.5GB per day, currently with 150GB of bonus data on top.
  • Vi Rs 3,499 and Rs 3,599: 1.5GB and 2GB per day respectively, with Vi’s night data and weekend rollover extras.

Maths check 1: the annual pack already wins, hike or no hike

Here is the cost per day and the full-year bill if you keep renewing a shorter pack instead, at today’s prices:

  • Jio Rs 349 (2GB/day, 28 days): about Rs 12.46 a day, roughly Rs 4,549 over a year
  • Jio Rs 859 (2GB/day, 84 days): about Rs 10.23 a day, roughly Rs 3,733 over a year
  • Jio Rs 3,599 (2.5GB/day, 365 days): about Rs 9.86 a day, Rs 3,599 flat
  • Airtel Rs 979 (2GB/day, 84 days): about Rs 11.65 a day, roughly Rs 4,254 over a year
  • Airtel Rs 3,599 (2GB/day, 365 days): about Rs 9.86 a day, Rs 3,599 flat
  • Airtel Rs 409 (2.5GB/day, 28 days) against Rs 3,999 annual: roughly Rs 5,332 a year against Rs 3,999

Read that again. A Jio user who keeps doing the Rs 349 monthly-ish recharge pays about Rs 950 more in a year than the annual pack, and gets less daily data. An Airtel user on the 84-day Rs 979 cycle pays about Rs 655 more. The annual discount exists today, no hike required. The one exception is Jio’s 84-day Rs 859 pack, which is only about Rs 134 behind the annual over a full year. Thoda sa bachat, not a dhamaka.

Maths check 2: now add the hike

Let us assume the forecast comes true and a 15 percent hike lands roughly 140 days from now, around March 2027. You keep renewing your short pack at today’s rate until then, and at the new rate after. Here is what a year costs you:

  • Jio Rs 349 route: about Rs 4,970, so the annual pack saves you around Rs 1,370
  • Jio Rs 859 route: about Rs 4,078, so the annual saves around Rs 480
  • Airtel Rs 979 route: about Rs 4,647, so the annual saves around Rs 1,050
  • Airtel Rs 409 route: about Rs 5,825, so the Rs 3,999 annual saves around Rs 1,825

With a smaller 12 percent hike, the Jio Rs 349 route lands near Rs 4,886, still about Rs 1,290 more than the annual. These are our own estimates using today’s listed prices and a hike that may or may not happen, so treat them as direction, not destiny. The direction is clear though: the hike adds a few hundred rupees to a saving you were already getting.

History backs this up. When Jio raised tariffs on 3 July 2024, its 2.5GB-per-day annual pack jumped from Rs 2,999 to Rs 3,599, and the old Rs 239 monthly plan became Rs 299. Anyone who locked the annual pack in June 2024 dodged a Rs 600 jump for that whole year.

Lock-or-Wait Test for annual recharge

The CyberIntro Lock-or-Wait Test

Answer these in order and stop at the first one that catches you. It takes two minutes and could save you a rupee-shaped headache.

1. Might you port out or switch SIMs in the next 12 months? WAIT

An annual pack is only cheap if you use all 365 days. If you port to another operator after six months, you have paid Rs 3,599 for something that would have cost roughly Rs 2,270 on Jio’s Rs 349 cycle, so you are about Rs 1,300 down. Students moving cities, people testing a rival’s 5G, or anyone unhappy with their network should stay on 28 or 84-day packs. Also note that Jio’s anniversary plan terms say the part of the price allocated to its bundled extras is non-refundable.

2. Would Rs 3,600 today hurt your EMI or emergency buffer? GO 84-DAY

Saving Rs 950 over a year is nice. Missing a credit card due date to do it is not. If cash is tight this festive month, the 84-day pack gets you most of the per-day saving with a third of the upfront pain. On Jio, the 84-day Rs 859 pack is almost as cheap per day as the annual.

3. Do you use less than 1GB a day because you live on Wi-Fi? GO LIGHT ANNUAL

A 2GB-per-day pack is wasted money if your phone sits on home broadband all day. Airtel and Vi both list Rs 2,249 annual packs with 30GB of total data, and voice-only annual packs start around Rs 1,849. Our voice-only recharge plans guide breaks down when those make sense.

4. Same number, spare cash, daily data user? LOCK 365

Congratulations, you are the person annual packs were built for. Lock it, forget about recharge reminders for a year, and enjoy watching the hike headlines from a safe distance.

Airtel postpaid users: your own quick check

If Airtel moved you to a new Rs 499 rental, do the comparison once. Rs 499 a month adds up to about Rs 5,988 a year, and postpaid bills usually add GST on top, so check your last bill. Airtel’s Rs 3,599 prepaid annual pack costs about Rs 2,389 less than the rental alone. What does postpaid give you for that gap? Fast Lane priority on 5G, Google One and Xstream Play Premium, plus one free international roaming trip a year. If you travel abroad every year, that roaming pack has real value. If you never leave India and do not use the bundled apps, prepaid annual is the cheaper ride. Family plans are a different calculation, because the bundled Prime, JioHotstar or Netflix can genuinely replace subscriptions you already pay for.

How to lock in without wasting a single day

  • Check your circle’s price first. Open MyJio, Airtel Thanks or the Vi app with your own number. Plans differ by circle, and a plan you read about may not show for you.
  • Time it near expiry. Look at the checkout screen to see whether the new pack starts now or after your current one ends. If it starts immediately, recharge near the last day so you do not throw away leftover validity.
  • Pay from the official app or site only. Fake “annual recharge at 50 percent off” links love hike headlines. Our festive scam safety setup covers the basics.
  • Screenshot the plan details. If benefits like bonus data vouchers do not show up later, you have proof to raise a complaint.
  • Redeem bonus vouchers on time. Jio’s anniversary data vouchers must be redeemed manually in MyJio and expire if you forget them.

Final Thought

The annual recharge is not a hike hedge first. It is simply the cheapest way to buy daily data today, and a hike only sweetens the deal. On our maths, a Jio user on the Rs 349 cycle saves about Rs 950 a year by switching to the annual pack, and around Rs 1,370 if a 15 percent hike lands in March. Skip it only if you might port out, cash is tight, or you barely use mobile data. Otherwise, lock it in, set one calendar reminder for October 2027, and let the tariff drama be someone else’s tension. Paisa vasool, with zero monthly reminders.
